The reigning French Open champion and #7 seed Jelena Ostapenko will take on her former doubles partner Kontaveit (2013- ITF Tallinn 25K Doubles Champions) for a place in the round of 16. Ostapenko had played two matches (Pliskova in Shenzhen, Makarova in Sydney) before coming to Melbourne and lost both of them in straight-sets.
Ostapenko has made two appearances at the Australian Open, a first-round in 2016 losing to Hsieh and a third-round in 2017 defeating Lin Zhu and Putintseva, but losing to Karolina Pliskova in the extended third set.
Ostapenko, who made an ordinary start to the season (lost first two matches) produced an unconvincing performance in the second-round as she had to scrap past the World #100 Chinese Duan Ying-Ying in three-sets (6-3 3-6 6-4).
#32 seed Anett Kontaveit has played two tough matches this week, defeating Krunic in straight-sets and Germanys Mona Barthel in three-sets. The Estonian had a retirement against Aoyama in Sydney just before coming to Melbourne (7-5 4-6 3-0).
Konatveit had a successful year in 2017. She made three WTA finals (Biel, s-Hertogenbosch and Gstaad) and winning her first title in s-Hertogenbosch defeating Vikhlyantseva in the final. Apart from that, she also made the third-round in Wimbledon, defeating Kasatkina in second-round. However, her end to the season was shaky, winning just two matches in last eight tournaments.
Kontaveit won their only previous meeting that came at ITF Ilkley in 2015 (6-1 6-2), the match was played on Grass where Kontaveit has got a good record (W/L 37/11) and Ostapenko has come a long way since then. Though Ostapenko starts this match as the favorite (1.6) theres no real favorite here and anyone can win this third-round match.
